Being a witness and behaving in a helpful manner

Support the police!

Civil courage, solidarity and help, looking in instead of looking away and commitment instead of apathy are always important, particularly at large events such as EURO 2008.

Even today fellow citizens intervene courageously and spiritedly in risky situations. By doing so they prevent even worse situations and help considerably to solve a crime.

Often it is however difficult to know how to effectively intervene, without putting yourself in danger. Help in the correct way, but do not play the hero – the following tips should help you to do so!

Police tips for EURO 2008

Avoid problems by observing the following tips:

1. Help without putting yourself in danger

It is important to get help. Sometimes it is enough to use your mobile phone and call the police or to ask other people for help. If it is possible for you to do so without danger, try to irritate the offender by shouting that you are calling the police...

2. Get help on the emergency number 117

Inform the police, do not assume that other people have already done it!! If you have informed the police try to find witnesses who have also observed this situation.

3. Ask other people actively and directly for help

Address other people concretely and get a partner or helper! "You with the green jacket, come with me we’ve got to help this woman!” or "You with the blue T-shirt, please inform the police". By approaching people directly you make sure that the person cannot pass on the responsibility to somebody else. .

4. Avoid a confrontation with the offender

Keep a verbal distance from the offender. Do not provoke him/her. Speak to him/her formally if possible. Do not bring yourself down to his/her level.

5. Look after the victim

Take the victim as far away from the „danger situation“ as possible by saying something like: "Come with me (us), we’ll look after you“ or "Come on over and sit with us". By acting in this way you do not have to even address the offender.

6. Observe the situation well and memorise the features of the offender

Write down the most important point on a piece of paper so that you don’t forget (time, place, progression of event, special factors).

7. Make yourself available to be a witness

Unfortunately there are still too many people who have observed „dangerous situations“ or even crimes from the beginning to end, but then tell the police that they do not know anything and do not make themselves available as witnesses. Do not be one of these “not me’s”!
